August News

A busy weekend on Poppet, our Leisure 17, AKA 'The Dinghy With A Lid'. Skipper JK Habbershaw, helped by his friend Tom, has continued glassing in the new companionway, cut out the doghouse windows, marked up Raymarine instrument locations, filling and fairing to the deck, and built the new kingpost/compression post base.

Now that we benefit from warm, dry weather, reassembly is moving fast. We hope to get our Hempel Yacht two-pack paint applied next week (weather and labour/workshop permitting).

The next stage is to visit Z-Spar for our new mast, boom, and rigging. We can work with Kemp Sails on our new sails and Barton Marine Equipment Ltd on our deck hardware.

Once our rig is on the boat, we can start fabricating the solar panel arch above the cockpit and check for our Hydrovane International Marine self-steering wind vane fitment.

After being let down (again), we are working with another electric motor supplier for our #dinghywithalid. We hope to have an answer to progress with the electrical design this week and start fitting the equipment. Using a rechargeable electric motor will help with our The Green Blue pledge, be more reliable to start, and help us avoid the danger of petrol onboard.

First Mate, Farris Collins will take part in RYA Day Skipper practical assessment this upcoming weekend after passing his RYA Day Skipper Theory examinations last month.

We’ll be at Southampton Boat Show next month to display Poppet and the work carried out, discuss our upcoming adventure, and raise some money for our charities: Macmillan Cancer Support Mind MS-UK St Helena

Due to the poor spring and early summer weather, which has led to delays in our supply and labour chain, our exhausted Skipper is trying to use every waking moment between family and work time to make up for it. We have been let down by equipment and financial sponsors when it became time to ‘collect’, and this has impeded our morale and project flow.

We are trying to compensate for the shortfall, but it has become a balance of time raising funds/equipment vs. working on the boat.

We are confident we’ll have a working sailing #dinghywithalid by December, but we are calling again on our followers and potential sponsors to help our project logistic costs so that we will have enough time for proper sea trials with Poppet and avoid delaying the expedition.

Skipper.
